CLIC24 2004
Saturday 15th May 2004 saw the 'NUbike Narcoleptics' & James Dymond venture down to Somerset for CLIC 24 2004, the “UK’s toughest 24hr race”… and all for a good cause, raising money for the Cancer and Leukaemia in Children charity.
James had all foolishly entered the race’s solo category, hoping to complete as many laps of the course as possible alone in the 24hrs, whilse the NUbike team were on a 'lets take it fairly easy' theme, with James Hampshire injured and Andy Robson still recovering from recent injuries. <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:time>3pm</st1:time> on Saturday saw the riders, including 21 solo riders and 52 teams set off around the course, which proved to be rather ‘interesting’…
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p> </o:p>At just 2.5 miles long, it certainly was the UK’s shortest 24hr race course… what should also be mentioned is the 500 feet of climbing packed into every one of those laps – mainly in one massive hill which was unrideable for all but 3 or so of the competitors. Despite this major flaw, there were some great bits to the course, including jumps and swoopy sections at the start, long grassy downhills and technical singletrack. A real killer loop though, that’s for sure, and one that we were all going to get to know really well!<o:p></o:p>
And so 24hrs of glorious sunshine, heat, dust, sleeping (well, just a little!), eating (lots!) and of course, riding, ensued. By <st1:time>3pm</st1:time> of Sunday those who were still going had had more than enough and the final results were as follows (full results here: http://www.joelee.co.uk/2004/clic24/clic24_04.pdf)
-
NUbike Narcoleptics - 3rd in Team Competitive category: 60 laps.
-
James Dymond - 6th in solo category: 28 laps (~70 miles & ~14,000ft of climbing!)
<o:p> </o:p>A great result, well done to everyone! <o:p> A</o:p> great event overall (hopefully to be improved next year with some course modifications!) & all for a good cause, with around £15,000 being raised for charity!
