XC/ROAD TRIP - 10-12th June - Lake District - SIGN UP!!

samball 01 May, 2011 11:19

So we've decided to hold a trip for the XC'ers who didn't manage to go to BUCS in Moelfre and for the roadies who haven't had a big weekend trip this year.

Dates have been set from 10-12th June as this is after exams. We will most likely leave on the Friday evening to give us plenty of time to set up and get a full two days of riding. (3.5 hour drive to get there!)

Location, Lake Disctrict as rumours have been flying around about the spectacular riding to be had both on and off road.

Prices TBC depending on numbers but should be low as some of the cost will be subsided by the club.

So sign up below and lets get this party on the road!

Also if you have a car and are willing to drive, please let us know.

What are the riding plans?

Any of the roadies up for an attempt at the Fred Whitton route? It could be as much as 56 miles downhill. :p (not saying we have to do it all in a day, but if anyone else is up for it).

http://www.fredwhittonchallenge.org.uk/route.php

If your thinking of basing yourself near Keswick the mountain bikers can ride the 'Barrowdale bash'. Ridden a couple of variations of it and it's not too challenging a Lakes ride.

I have ridden two other loops in the lakes around Coniston, Grizedale and Windermere. But the best stuff is super loose rocky stuff (both climbs and descents). Never ridden Helvellyn but would like to.

Tonnes of other routes about, just get a map and pick a bridle way.

JPUK08 04 May, 2011 18:14

I've read about the fred whitton challenge before and it sounds awesome(hard). Doubt I'm going to be able to get up a 1 in 3 on a compact(34-26) without walking, but I'm definitely game

JPUK08 04 May, 2011 18:16

Actually, just had a look around. Apparantly it's just about do-able with that gearing

Bring it on :D

samball 04 May, 2011 18:42

mtb wise I reckon we find a route first day when everyone's fresh (unlike moelfre...) and second day hit the trail centre and just ride as much as we want/can :)

It seems pretty easy to find some good routes so we'll just print off a map and plan something before we go!

Tim Birtwhistle 04 May, 2011 20:53

I'm up for this, the steeper the hills to better. Is it camping btw?

samball 04 May, 2011 22:28

We'll see what we can find depending on numbers but most likely camping as its cheaper. Could be some cheap caravans lying about though!

Andy_ 06 May, 2011 00:43

Any chance I can come? It's lonely oop norf.

Might have to wait for me on some climbs mind :P

Alejandro 06 May, 2011 11:40

Can do, would have to see how that works though as it's in the other direction; would you be able to make it down to Nottingham or meet us there?

Andy_ 06 May, 2011 16:21

Whatever is easy for you guys. I'll only come if there's space mind, I don't want to be putting anyone out if spaces are short.

Will you be going up the M1?

I can come down to Nottingham or I could meet you somewhere near Sheffield on a junction or service station.

Alejandro 06 May, 2011 16:50

I don't know how we're getting there to be honest, I checked on Google Maps previously and it suggests going west on the A50 to Stoke, then north via the M6. But there seems to be little time penalty going straight up north on the M1, then deflecting west. We'll have to discuss it and I'll get back to you. How would you get to Nottingham/Sheffield if we were to pick you up from there?

Tom Evans 07 May, 2011 10:27

may do this.

Andy_ 08 May, 2011 00:15

Ahh, cool.

I'd make my way on the train. The station at meadowhall is right next to junction 34 on the M1.

I'd come down on the train to Notts the day before and find somewhere to crash.
