SUMMER UPDATE (Finally) - socials, XC/Road/DH, kit, all you need to know...

Alejandro 08 August, 2011 20:59

Hi all,

As promised, here's a little update (somewhat belated) as to what is going on with the club, as per the committee meeting just before breaking up:

1. The new NUBike Facebook page will be going live in a few days... like it when it does. I'll post the link here of course. This will be the new way to get all the club info on FB direct to your newsfeed instead of having to check the group page all the time.

2. The FIRST MTB TRIP will be to Cannock Chase as per tradition, this will provide some great local riding for XC and DH.

3. Another XC/ROAD TRIP will be held to the Peaks, this was a roaring success last time (lol), and as the riding there is fantastic both on and off-road.

4. James Ashby, your XC sec, is working on the XC/ROAD KIT for next year - this year we want to have it all designed and ordered within the first few weeks of term to have it as close to the start of the year as possible - hopefully we can bully Matt into designing it this year again as he did a grand job ;)

5. This year we want DH KIT as there wasn't any last year, hopefully I'll be able to get in touch with the downhillers on the committee at some point, I understand they have been difficult to contact due to shredding it in the Alps over the summer(!)

6. We will have green AU-issue HODDIES - the ones all AU clubs have though ours will say 'Cycling' funnily enough - us committee members will have ones with positions on them such as 'Alex - President' etc., I am working on this and aiming to have these at the start of the year, though then we'll also be doing another order for the rest of the club members who want them. Cost will be about £30-35.

7. Your ROAD SEC should be working on contacting the Uni's physiology labs to sort us out some free testing for lactate thresholds, VO2 max, etc., so whoever wants can have performance data measured every so often, should prove interesting.

8. The FIRST SOCIAL OF THE YEAR which will be sorted by your social sec Sam Saragi, is due to take place in Week 2 - the 4th October I believe is the provisional date. Guaranteed to be a corker.

9. This year we (Sam) will once again be organising the now-legendary NUBIKE XMAS SOCIAL which in the past has seen ambulances and certain club members puking on their own backs... This is a classic within the club and has it all, a night not to be missed.

10. MINIBUS TRAINING will be given to ideally two people over 21 who have a UK driving license, I think we provisionally agreed on who this would be, Joe Dean and someone else, I'll need reminding - either way we will be able to do mega massive trips to far away and exotic locations like Wales and the North after that.

11. I will be commencing work on the NEW WEBSITE soon which will feature a blog format for all the latest news on trips, races etc., as well as the forum you know and love.

PS. There MIGHT be a mega weekend XC/Road/DH trip to Wales for all three disciplines, which will involve the XCers and roadies doing a day at the Newport velodrome as well as their usual riding on the other day - this is TBC.

That just about sums it up... check us out at our stall on Freshers Fair in Week 1 and say hello.

Feel free to ask any questions concerning the above.

Alex

Hi Alex

Sorry i've been off the radar for months, looking forward to cracking on next week. I'll sort out membership asap.

Btw, I think I was the other person suggested for minibus training

Thanks for the update mate, we are gonna have a meeting on Sunday regarding Freshers Fair etc. Will get a time and location out ASAP but I've just got back from abroad and have 60 email to sift through!

Hi all,

Good idea to get the kit done early. Maybe you should collect sizing details from people at freshers fair so we can get an order in asap.

I especially like #7 so good luck with sorting that out Matt! I'd imagine there'll be between 10-20 riders interested in being tested. The University has an obligation to support its students' activities and physiological testing is v. important in cycling so it should be possible. If they're too gay about it perhaps offer a token donation..

I'd also like to suggest that we organise a hill climb (maybe on that nice new stretch of green/gold road on campus or over some cobbles in town) and a alley-cat style sprint behind trent. The latter is pretty easy now that 'the tunnel' is a cycle route and it's oh so close to our usual meet. The former would require some serious negotiation with uni/nottingham if we made it official but a hill climb is not dangerous in the way a race is so it'd be more about restricting access than safety.

I'm free to do a couple of shifts at the freshers stall if needs be. Hit me up on lgyclbv at nottingham ac uk.

Kit will be done much earlier than was the case last year, near the start. Matt CW has told me he already has a provisional design.

If we don't get testing at this Uni we could perhaps do it at Trent or elsewhere - labs are always looking for guinea pigs and free testing shouldn't be hard to find.

I'll leave the road sec to deal with any potential hill climbs/races, so put it to him.

I'll email you regarding Freshers' Fair - we could do with another roadie.
