SingleSpeed

I'm looking to convert my old dmr sidekick into a singlespeed after gears breaking/dodgy chainbreak but it dosen't have sliding dropouts. What is the best/cheapest chain tensioner and convirsion kit and is there anyhting I should know about before attempting this tomfoolery?

I bodged an old XTR rear mech to work - just fed cable from cable stop on mech to the bolt (so about 2" worth) and worked a treat.

Also used U-bend from Focus for the spacers on cassette, rather than old cassette spacers or a proper kit - then just need to keep the 11t cog and lockring from a cassette to attach it all.

i'd second that...find an old rear mech and give it a go. find some long bolts so you can lock out the stops, you can probably steal one of the b-tension ones.

Give a halflink chain a shot. Aaron runs one on his GT singlespeed (vert dropouts as well). It rides painfully smooth.

Yea, i did run the alflink tho its stretched a bit now, its well worth paying the £3 for one of the gusset ss rings, then i used some pipe like said above
i just found that cassete rings bent after very little use if you gave them some real power the same as thin chains seemed to snap, but half link chains can mean you dont need a tensioner.
